Welcome

Our club’s aim is to foster an interest in and the enjoyment of photography.  We do this through competitions, workshops, lectures, outings and meetings with other camera clubs.

Our members are all keen amateur photographers. Their photographic interests may vary – landscape, portraiture, sporting, abstract, etc.,  but they all share a passion for capturing great images, improving their skills and techniques and sharing their knowledge and experiences with other members.  Some examples of our members’ recent photos appear on this page.

31st May Social Night

We are thrilled that our awarded and valued member, Nil De Silva, has offered to share with us some of the stories behind the images in her book, Fate or Destiny: Living Life with Passion. Prints from her previous exhibition will be on display also which will provide a great opportunity for discussion. Nil’s book will also be available for purchase at a heavily discounted price of $20, with all proceeds going back into the club so that we can continue to provide our members with great speakers and events. We are very thankful to Nil and her generous donation to the club.

But wait, there is more!

Corinna has also kindly offered to talk about what a “portfolio” might be and how we can all learn from working on a project like this. With any luck, Sonia will be well enough to join us and display some of her past portfolios for us to view and discuss.

31st May Social Night

Further to the email sent out yesterday about Nil’s talk on 31st May… Peter Eastway was due to join us but is unfortunately unable to present as planned, so we look forward to seeing him in 2023. Instead, we have decided to turn the evening into a long awaited social event, where we can chat with one another and nibble on some yummy food.

We are also thrilled that our awarded and valued member, Nil De Silva, has offered to share with us some of the stories behind the images in her book, Fate or Destiny: Living Life with Passion. HHCC Presentation – Fate or Destiny

Fate or Destiny: Living Life with Passion and Finding Your Why
with Nilmini De Silva

Next Tuesday 31st May, our club member Nilmini De Silva will share with us some of the stories behind the images in her book, Fate or Destiny: Living Life with Passion. Fate or Destiny is a collection of photos and stories that aim to inspire people to make conscious choices in life. Nilmini launched this photo exhibition together with her photo book at the Hornsby Library in 2014 which then travelled to many venues around NSW.

If you make it on Tuesday, Nil has promised you will get a free copy of her book. This exhibition was created after Nilmini completed two important journeys. The first was a solo journey where she travelled and volunteered around the world for a year in her quest to rediscover happiness, reinvent herself and also complete her goal of spending quality time on every continent before turning 50.

The goal was accomplished with her arrival in Antarctica for Christmas in 2010 after being on the road for much of that year. The second journey was undertaken with her partner Steven Liaros in 2013, when they spent 6 months in Europe and Sri Lanka, volunteering in intentional communities and eco-villages to better understand what drove people to think and live differently. In her photo book Nilmini raises questions on many aspects of life that are often taken for granted and challenges her audience to examine life more carefully. Her photography is inspired by her love for the natural environment and her desire to share stories of the extraordinary people she has met.

Nilmini is an Engineer (Water Management) and Director of the Town Planning Consultancy she runs with her partner Steven Liaros. In her spare time, she is a Documentary Photographer who specialise in using images and words to highlight the social issues she cares about. She has always loved writing but discovered her passion for photography while volunteering as a Conservation Photographer in South Africa during her 2010 solo year of travel while on a sabbatical from her then local government job. Nil
is now an internationally awarded photographer with National and International Photography Honours. Her most recent claims to fame is that she placed in the Top 20 of the Art Category of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2022 (Capture Magazine) and in the Top 20 Aerial Category
of Photographer of the Year 2021 (Australian Photography Magazine).

Vale Alan Torrens

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Hornsby Heights Camera Club founding and life member Alan Torrens on Tuesday 17th May, 2022. The following tribute by long time friend and fellow founding club member, Doug, sums up all of our feelings. We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Jenny and his family.

A Tribute to Alan Torrens

Alan joined Hornsby Heights Camera Club at the first meeting of the club on 15 February 1983. In those days we met in the private home of the first President David Hewitt in Somerville Road Hornsby Heights.

Alan was a very competent Black and White worker as well as taking beautiful colour slides. Alan had a good eye for patterns and shapes. I remember some of his early prints of city buildings and especially panoramas of the city taken from the harbor bridge pylon lookout. He made a number of these over the years showing the development of the City.

Alan had a strong commitment to the club and was a regular participant in all its activities. He was elected Vice President a few years after he joined the club and continued in that role until last year. He was always ready to lead when needed. He entered the black and white section and the colour slide section throughout the film era. In recent times he unfailingly entered the colour print and digital projected image section as well. He regularly came early to help set up for meetings and did this consistently over the years.

Alan was involved in a number of photography related activities.  He also was a member of Pennant Hills Photographic Club and was equally committed to that club. He was a regular attender at the FCC Annual Yarramundi Weekend Camp and always encouraged others to attend. He taught a photography course at Hornsby for a number of years. Along with Alan Logan he organised the photographic exhibition at the St Ives Show for about 15 years. He was a volunteer to help organise the Sydney International Exhibition of Photography for a few years until it went completely digital. He was the club’s FCC delegate for many years.

Alan was also involved in a group that built a chalet at Charlotte Pass and he encouraged members of our club to join with Pennant Hills Club for a week there in the summer walking and taking photos. This occurred annually for about five years.

Alan loved nature and the Australian landscape. He enjoyed photographing frogs, fungi and bark patterns a well as the great Outback. He also enjoyed going on bus camping tours especially photographic ones. We went on tours to Tasmania, Outback Queensland and the Northern Territory. He also went on Camping Tours organised by the FCC and also many commercially operated tours. Always taking photos.

When the club had an Exhibition in Hornsby Library Alan was always there to help prepare and arrange the prints on the walls. When the club entered the Audio Visual Challenge Alan was the one who learnt the program and made the images come together in an outstanding way that enabled the club to win.

Alan Torrens was a quiet person but was always ready with a reasoned answer based on his knowledge as a science teacher and as an experienced photographer. He was always ready to help and worked quietly behind the scenes. His commitment to his hobby of photography and to our club was unwavering. I could always count on Alan. He will be greatly missed.

Doug Carley

Alan’s funeral will be held on Monday 30th May at 11.15am at Northern Suburbs Cremitorium, North Ryde in the North Chapel.

Sport Photography Opportunity

Sean, our old president has reached out to us to give the club an opportunity to practice some sports photography. Here’s his letter:

“I’m part of the coaching squad in Hornsby Heights Football Club, each
year we have a Female Football Festival, designed to showcase and expand
female participation in football. I’m involved in organising the day
which is happening on Sunday May 22nd.

For many years I’ve been the primary photographer and may be again this
year; however I would love to extend an invite to members who have an
interest in sports photography, or just photography, that may wish to
get some practice in. The event runs from 9am until approx 4:30pm –
games will run across 5 fields during this period. No expectation of
someone to be there all day – even though I usually am when I am the
only photographer.”

If you are interested, let me know and I can put you in contact with Sean.

HHCC 2022 Photo Rally Brief

Hi All,

Welcome to today’s photo rally. You’ll find the brief for this attached here! Have a fun day!!

HHCC – 2022 Photo Rally

STOP PRESS – IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN – 7th MAY 2022 PHOTO RALLY

As this is our main outing of the year, we hope you’ve put it in your diaries and that most of our members will join us for our biggest social event of the year.

Hi Everyone,

It’s that time of year again and we are heading to Barangaroo, The Rocks and Darling Harbour (see map attached) where there are some amazing photo opportunities! And the weather looks good too!! We’ve expanded the area this year as most of us haven’t had many opportunities since
covid hit to get out and about in the city with our cameras. Details are attached, please see our flyer.

The brief will be given out on Saturday morning when we meet at 10.30am,
those that can’t make it, there will be an email sent out as well after 11 a.m.
It is important that anyone attending send an email with their phone number just in case any details change, to elaine.holliday@ymail.com or
secretaryhornsbyheightscameraclub@outlook.com, or you can text or call so that I know who is coming. I have made a WhatsApp Group so we are able to connect with each other.

Don’t worry if you don’t have WhatsApp as we can communicate by text. Anyone who has already let me know they are coming doesn’t need to let me know again.

See you on Saturday.
Elaine
